Hydrogen and Fuel Cells 

Hydrogen and fuel cells can play a critical role in ensuring the nation’s energy independence. Hydrogen can be produced from diverse domestic resources and used in a range of applications across all sectors. Fuel cells help enable this flexibility of use by offering a variety of configurations that can be used in large- and small-scale power generation for transportation, stationary, and portable equipment. A number of federal agencies are conducting and collaborating on hydrogen and fuel cell-related research, development, and demonstration as part of a portfolio of options to address the nation’s energy and environmental challenges.

Energetics has been an important part of hydrogen energy and fuel cell development, both in the United States and around the world. Our experts have been involved in high-profile hydrogen and fuel cell activities, including the production of nationally recognized visions, roadmaps, and strategic plans; support for a variety of interagency and international working groups, including the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technical Advisory Committee and the International Partnership for a Hydrogen Economy; and numerous other projects designed to engage outside participation in formulating national research and development (R&D) priorities while also educating on R&D goals and progress.
