The global health field addresses issues that transcend national boundaries and have political and economic consequences on a worldwide scale. Infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and AIDS collectively affect billions of people each year in both developing and developed nations. Additionally, the recent emergence of avian influenza and extremely drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis reveals the potential for isolated incidents to rapidly evolve into global pandemics that demand coordinated action.

Developing and implementing programs and infrastructure that promote good health in such a complex environment is a far-reaching challenge. Limited resources, strained health care systems, cultural and gender inequities, poor distribution systems, and simple lack of access to health care by those most in need complicate global health issues.
