New York State Superconductivity Outreach Workshop

Background
The U.S. Department of Energy continues its efforts to improve the planning, management, and implementation of its Superconductivity for Electric Systems research and development (R&D) program. The National Energy Policy recommended that R&D be expanded in transmission reliability and superconductivity. Several electric power applications such as superconducting transmission and distribution cables, power transformers, fault current limiters, and generators are currently being planned or demonstrated. Ultimately, the introduction of superconducting electric power equipment onto the grids expected to yield benefits of greater efficiency (lower losses), extended life, lower operating costs, increased throughput, reduced environmental impacts, and reduced space requirements.

To assist in raising awareness of the national program and to obtain views and insights of key stakeholders, DOE, in concert with New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in partnership with Albany NanoTech at the University of Albany and Energetics completed a series of interviews with selected industry and policy leaders who have an interest in adopting superconducting electric power equipment to meet the power delivery needs of New York State. Useful information and insights were collected during these outreach meetings concerning challenges and opportunities for deploying and commercializing high-temperature superconducting power equipment.

Description
As a follow-up to the individual outreach meetings to summarize and disseminate the results from the outreach, Albany NanoTech, Energetics, NYSERDA and the DOE are hosting a one-day workshop at Albany NanoTech (University of Albany), Albany, New York). We would like you to attend. Panels of experts will discuss important issues facing the electricity sector and the superconductivity industry. Discussions will be encouraged with both government and industry stakeholders in order to facilitate a better understanding of market opportunities and industry needs.

A summary report of the stakeholder meetings and this outreach workshop can be found here.
