How confident are you in the quality of your organization’s performance data? Can you use it to inform decisions? Does it help to tell your organization’s story and communicate its value to stakeholders?

Accuracy and reliability are essential to valid measurement and are central aspects of Energetics’ verification and validation (V&V) assessments. “How do we ensure accuracy and reliability?” is a question we often hear during our V&V meetings.

The key to achieving accuracy and reliability is to understand that both qualities are actually about error. In particular, achieving accuracy and reliability in measures entails mitigating the potential for error in the methods and procedures by which you collect data.

Note that we said mitigating, not eliminating, error—virtually all performance measurement data includes some error. It is simply not feasible to eliminate all error and, even if it were possible, it would probably not be worth the cost and effort involved. Most users require only data that does not contain an unreasonable amount of error.

This guide presents three steps by which you can mitigate error. In our experience, these steps go a long way to improving accuracy and reliability, and implementing them is relatively straightforward—you do not need to be a measurement expert.
