Electric vehicle (EV) ownership in New York State will increase rapidly over the next few years, causing a demand for more charging stations. Municipal planning boards are in an influential position to recommend and encourage EV charging stations during a crucial stage in development projects, when it is very cost effective to install them. To make informed decisions and recommendations, municipal planning board members and planning staff must be well-versed on EVs and charging stations. With support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Energetics teamed with WXY Architecture and Urban Design to develop resources for planners and planning board members to better support EV charging station deployment.
The developed guidance document, Promoting Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installations (11.1 MB PDF) explains the basics of EV technology, reviews the current state of EVs in New York State, and presents step-by-step advice and best practices for facilitating charging stations in the planning process.
The guidance document includes many links to find more in-depth information on EVs, along with some materials developed specifically for planners, municipal planning board members, and municipal staff.
