Energetics developed monthly brochures for the U.S. Department of Energy on the status of the Nuclear Power 2010 program (NP2010) and the licensing process for new nuclear power plants.
Client Need
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Light Water Reactor Development requested a monthly “scorecard” providing the current status of new commercial nuclear plant development, including DOE’s NP2010 program that provides federal financial incentives for utility companies to build nuclear plants. The scorecard gives the current status of each license application for the design, siting, and construction/operation of nuclear reactors, along with a synopsis of recent news events. A companion supplement document presents more detailed information in a different format.
Solution
To ensure that the licensing information remains current, our nuclear team monitors numerous news and industry information sources and includes recent developments affecting plans to build the plants. Our staff maintains a number of spreadsheets and charts documenting each step of the licensing process, summarizing key facts in the scorecard and supplemental sheet.
Results
The Department of Energy uses these brochures and the
brochure supplements to help policymakers and stakeholders, who may not be familiar with the details of a very complex licensing process, understand where the nuclear industr y and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission stand in their efforts to license advanced nuclear reactors. Recipients have included members of Congress, the White House, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
