Energetics developed a step-by-step framework and associated spreadsheet tool to help plants and companies in the Save Energy Now program establish a baseline for their industrial energy intensity and energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Client Need
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program needed a flexible and straightforward, yet accurate and defensible methodology to offer to companies that volunteered to reduce their energy intensity by 25% or more over 10 years.
Solution
Energetics used our in-depth understanding of the diverse industrial sector and our knowledge of the widely accepted Greenhouse Gas Protocol to devise a framework that was designed and tailored to the requirements of the DOE program. The framework helps plants and companies estimate energy consumption and output by manufacturing product line, which enables them to understand the GHG profile of their operations and identify opportunities for improvement. We conveyed the details of the framework through reports and spreadsheet tools.
Results
The framework and associated spreadsheet tool provide a basis for energy management planning and decision making to profile energy use and GHG emissions at the plant or company level and identify GHG reduction opportunities.
