This report presents an initial scope, strategy, and direction for NIST programs in the biosciences. NIST’s role in providing measurement science and standards for the biosciences has developed along with advances in this critical field.

A top-level, NIST-wide effort was initiated in 2007 to gather input from external sources. The information was used to develop a NIST biosciences strategy that can provide guidance for strategic decision-making and funding allocations, as well as the coordination of research and measurement services programs at NIST.

This document and the Accelerating Innovation in 21st Century Biosciences: Identifying the Measurement, Standards, and Technological Challenges  workshop report together serve as a first-ever assessment of measurement science in these important areas. These two reports have been published and are being used to guide public and private decision making on research and development and other programs in bioscience.
