The ASME Water Management Technology Best Management Practices and Innovations for the Process Industries roadmap identifies ten high-priority actions ASME can take to advance the development of best management practices (BMPs) for industrial water use.
Client Need
ASME is working to advance the development of BMPs for industrial water use to support the achievement of its water management technology vision. ASME needed to identify current industry challenges, barriers, and needs in order to better understand potential opportunities for ASME to provide leadership in this area.
Solution
Energetics helped ASME convene and facilitate a workshop on industrial water use for the process industries. The workshop’s goals were to identify, evaluate, document, and disseminate water use BMPs across the industry; define key research barriers and needs; and identify areas where ASME can pursue a leadership role in developing industrial water use BMPs. During the workshop, participants from federal agencies, universities, industries, and nongovernmental organizations discussed key challenges and opportunities in the areas of water efficiency, water treatment and reuse practices, and BMPs in water management.
Together, ASME and Energetics synthesized the workshop results to develop the roadmap. It identifies ten high-priority actions that ASME can pursue and provides a one-page summary for each action, identifying key tasks, potential partners, and next steps.
Results
The workshop and roadmap effectively capture current industry BMPs and provide a foundation for development of a new ASME approach to water management technology BMPs for industry. ASME may also use the workshop and roadmap as the starting point for creating a series of future water management technology workshops with industry sponsorship and collaborative funding.
