The Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) had a portfolio of R&D technologies and technical assistance activities designed to achieve its 2020 goal of reducing energy intensity by 20%—but it wasn’t clear those activities would achieve the goal. ITP needed to determine how its current activities would reduce energy intensity and identify opportunities for improvement.

Energetics researched current, practical minimum, and theoretical minimum energy consumption in the energy intensive industries, and compared each of ITP’s current technologies to those values. We projected the market growth out to 2020 and derived energy intensity estimates for each industry and for the industrial sector as a whole.
