Energetics has conducted technology evaluations of over 100 advanced industrial technologies for the U.S. DOE Office of Industrial Technologies (DOE/ITP).
Client Need
The DOE/ITP has a need to report annually on the performance of R&D portfolios under the Government Performance and Reporting Act (GPRA). This requires credible engineering analysis of the energy, economic, and environmental benefits of new technologies, based on a comparison of conventional technologies or practices.
Solution
Energetics developed a spreadsheet-based engineering model that enables the user to input data on new and conventional technology and predict the potential benefits of new technology over the next 20 or more years. The model provides predictive values on reductions in energy use and environmental/criteria pollutant emissions by source, avoided energy costs, and reductions in carbon emissions.
Results
The model values are aggregated for the dozens of technologies that comprise the DOE/ITP R&D portfolio and then become part of the DOE submission for GPRA. They also provide a perspective of potential benefits on the project-level, and assist in determining project importance and continued justification for funding.
